A phantom inclusion is a distinct earlier stage of crystal growth that is preserved inside a later layer of the same crystal. It’s essentially like the crystal contains a “ghost” or outline of itself from an earlier point in its growth.
For example, in a phantom quartz, the crystal may have originally grown to a certain size, then growth stopped. During that pause, minerals or tiny inclusions can settle onto the existing crystal surface. When growth resumes, a new layer of clear quartz grows around the older surface, leaving the earlier crystal shape visible inside.
